Maybe things aren't completely out of control...

Although there is much in life that is outside of our control, we do get to control where we put our attention.

We are affected by so many things in life. So much so that we can often feel like we're at the mercy of situations and forces outside of our control. But that doesn't mean we are powerless or don't have choices.

It's all too easy to spend time and energy wishing things hadn't unfolded as they have, or regretting our choices, words or actions. But when we're in that loop of worrying, fretting and stewing, it feels like there's a big boulder heading towards us, gathering in speed, volume and intensity. And we don't have the strength to push back against it.

What if it were possible to simply step aside and watch it continue to roll past? What would happen?

How on earth would we even do that?

Although there is much in life that is outside of our control, we do get to control where we put our attention. And we see more of whatever we're focusing on.

If you decide to focus on "help wanted" signs, dandelions in the sidewalk, or bright blue cars, you will see more of them. Try it today, just for fun. **

Not only do we see more of what we place our focus and attention on, we experience it in our bodies, to our benefit or detriment.

If you decide to focus on your own shortcomings, or those of others, that's what you will experience - in your head, your heart, your gut. When you place your attention on the things that feed you - the amazing people in your life, or your accomplishments - you get to experience how that feels - in your head, heart and gut.

I'm not suggesting you ignore the challenging parts of life or stop being accountable to yourself or others - we can't change our lives through positive affirmations.

But when you decide what you want to experience more of, and place your focus and attention there, you create more of those experiences for yourself.

And instead of that giant boulder of worry and fret, hurtling toward you at breakneck speed, a kaleidoscope of colourful balls appears. Some are arcing gracefully, others rolling gently, most moving slowly enough that you can see them clearly, and you then get to choose which ones you want to pick up and play with, when you want to set them down, and what ones you want to allow to continue to move past you. Without regret.

Not sure where to begin?

Start with one of these questions. Hold it gently and be curious about where it leads you.

What are you really proud of yourself for?
What do you love about yourself?
Who or what brings you joy?
Where or how do you experience awe?
What are you grateful for?

Where do you want to put your attention this week?
