Spiralling out of control? What if you could harness the power of a spiral?

I love how we can learn about ourselves from the natural world - of course we can - we're products of the patterns and principles that have existed in nature for millennia.
I had a conversation recently with someone who shares my love of nature, and talk turned quickly to spirals.
Spirals are everywhere - in the tendrils of a vine, the unfurling of a blossom, in our DNA.
Spirals are strong and flexible, more resilient to outside forces than a straight line. Force moves more easily through our bodies on a spiral path than a straight one. With each step we take, we spiral from the ground upward. Take a few steps right now and feel the spiral finding its way from your feet up through your hips, spine, and shoulders! Or reach up to a shelf or cupboard and feel your body spiralling toward your hand's destination.
Depending on your perspective, a spiral can look and feel like a never ending circle - like you're spinning your wheels, going nowhere, learning the same lesson over and over and over again. (Can you tell I've been there, too?!?!)
Look at it from a different angle, and you might see the distance that you've traveled, that learning those lessons over and over and over again are part of your growth, part of your strength and resilience. Oh - here comes that lesson again - is it a failure or an opportunity? How do you want to meet it?
Anyone in the personal growth world will tell you that progress isn't linear. There are mistakes and learning, there are crests and troughs, there are seasons. Consider the ups and downs of a typical progress chart:
What if we added a third dimension and shifted our perspective from highs and lows to a growth spiral?
What looks different? What feels different?
There's momentum, elasticity, energy in a spiral. No matter how we look at it.
Maybe things aren't spiralling out of control.
There's an opportunity to Pause, wherever you are in the spiral, and look around.
What if your valleys are just a part of your path, a season that you're moving through?
What if you're not spinning your wheels, but gathering strength, energy and wisdom for the challenges of the next season?
How can you enjoy the ride?
I invite you to notice the spirals around you this week. To notice their beauty, their strength, the unexpected places they show up.
Here's one of my favourite spirals:
