On seeing the forest and the trees...

We shift perspective when we learn to see the forest and the trees.

Last week I invited you to get curious instead of furious. If you're anything like me, I'm sure life offered you ample opportunity to practice - how did that go?

The principles I've been describing over the past several weeks are all part of the bigger picture of using the Pause to work with the nervous system. This week I invite you to consider another principle:

Zoom in, Zoom out; look at the details, look at the big picture.

When we're feeling stuck, it's easy to focus on one specific thing we'd like to change or fix. But it's a bit like playing whack-a-mole - something else will inevitably pop up, and probably sooner than you think.

In the movement realm, I work with people who want to feel less pain in a certain area - knee, hip, shoulder, or back. And the tendency is to focus the work on the place where the pain is. But if we only pay attention to one particular place, we aren't able to acknowledge and take advantage of connections and relationships throughout the whole body.

In the coaching realm, I work with people who want to achieve specific goals - if they focus only on that goal, the commitments they've made in all the other areas of their lives will be affected. When they become aware of connections - how the same values can be expressed and honoured in different parts of their lives, or how the same patterns show up in different ways - the work becomes more effective, and easier. Less work-like.

The Pause plays a role in both realms, providing time and space to look at and be curious about the big picture, context, relationships, connections... to see the forest and the trees.

When we take time to walk around the forest and look at the trees from different angles, we broaden our perspective, grow new awareness, and can decide on the steps we want to take to improve the wellbeing of both.

Today, tomorrow, this week - when life presents you with a problem to be solved, I invite you to Pause. Step back, see the forest and the trees, and get curious.
